Year 2 Team
Ash Class Timetable
Weekly spellings and maths homework will be updated here on a weekly basis.
From Thursday 29th November, all maths homework is now times tables based.
If you are speedy with your times tables, then these skills can be transferred to other areas of maths such as addition, subtraction, time and problem solving.
In Year 2, children should know their 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x and 4x tables fluently.
We are currently trialling 'Times Tables Rockstars'- a wonderful resource that is available online and as sheets that your child can complete in their homework book.
The idea of the sheets is that your child improves their score and time week by week, improving their 'rock star status'. This is the first time that we have done this, so don't worry if your child takes a while! Try to do a couple of sheets a week. Make it fun by timing them and reward them for trying their best.
If the sheets really aren't working for your child, then don't worry. Practice times tables using money (2p, 5p, 10p), grouping Lego/cubes/marbles/sticks/pebbles etc., downloading a fun app on your tablet (there's loads of times tables apps out there), practice chants in the car on the way to school... whatever method works best for your child! Channel what they love and they will love to learn them.
We'll be updating these sheets after Christmas. In the meantime, there's plenty here to keep you busy!

What’s happening in Autumn Term...
Autumn Term 2
A warm welcome back to the second half of the autumn term here in Year 2. We cannot believe that Christmas is just around the corner!
As previously mentioned, this year all of our topics in Ash and Willow are based around film and theatre and this half term our topic is ‘The Polar Express’!
‘One Christmas Eve many years ago, a boy lies in bed, listening hard for the bells of Santa’s sleigh, which he has been told by a friend does not exist. Later that night he hears not bells but a very different sound. He looks out his window and is astounded to see a steam engine parked in front of his house! The conductor invites him to board the Polar express, a train filled with children on their way to the North Pole…’
We are going to be entering a magical world full of all things Christmas. Of course our topic will be begin by watching ‘The Polar Express’ in our pyjamas and slippers with some delicious hot chocolate and cookies. We will then be handed our golden tickets to ‘board the train’ on our journey of learning. We will be exploring books all about the Arctic and Antarctic and learning traditional Christmas poems such as ‘Twas the night before Christmas’. Meanwhile in history we will be exploring the works of George Stevenson and the amazing input he had when it came to trains. In Science we will be learning all about the environment where the class will be introduced to climate change and the melting of the polar ice caps and what we can do to help the earth. All in all, a very exciting topic that everyone looks forward to getting stick into during the festive season!
PE kits and days
We will be having two hours of PE a week, on the following days:
Ash Class: Tuesday and Wednesday
Willow Class: Wednesday and Thursday
It is very important that your child has a suitable indoor and outdoor PE kit with trainers. Please make sure that your child's PE kit is clearly named.
Homework is very important as it helps your child to revise what they have learnt in school. It also helps to keep you informed of their progress and the current topics in the classroom.
To reduce the amount of paper used, homework is set under the 'Homework' section on this page. If you require a paper copy, please get in touch and this can be sorted for you.
Spellings are set weekly and children will be tested on Fridays.
Maths homework is also set on Fridays and collected in the following week.
Daily reading is also essential.
Things we need
Year 2 is full of amazing children and we want to celebrate every success and achievement during this year both inside and outside of school. We would love to hear about all the amazing things your child does, so please do come in and tell us about them.
As a team, we are always here for you. If you need to discuss anything, please do come in and have a chat. If however, you would like a longer session to talk about your child’s needs, please make an appointment so we can discuss your child without feeling rushed. If you need any other information, please do not hesitate to ask.
Many thanks for your continued support,
