Reading comprehension

Is your child reading his/her book at home fluently? Do you think that the book that they are reading is too easy for them? Then before you do anything, make sure that they really understand what they are reading. At the end of Year 2, children are tested in their reading and have to answer many tricky reading comprehension questions. Ask them some questions from the sheet below and see if they can answer them. If you think that their reading comprehension is fantastic, then please come and see Miss Poynton and she will help you with the next step smiley

What’s happening in Autumn Term...

A warm welcome back to the autumn school term here in Ash class.

This year all of our topics in Ash Class are based around film and theatre and this half term our topic is ‘Toy Story’!

We are going to begin this exciting year by taking a trip down memory lane and discovering what toys were like in the past. Our topic will of course begin by watching the fantastic film ‘Toy Story’ and discussing our favourite toys before moving on to look at toys which were popular when the children’s parents and grandparents were young.

We will be inviting the class to bring in their own toys and looking at similarities and differences and identifying changes in materials and technology. We will also be learning how to paint colourful portraits of our favourite toys which will lead us on to studying pictures from the beautifully illustrated ‘Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘The Tales of Peter Rabbit’. Our English lessons will enable us to read more exciting and well-known books such as ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes, ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ and ‘Where’s my teddy?’ by Jez Alborough.

From this truly exciting topic I am positive that we will all be encouraged and motivated to have a wonderful and exciting start to the year! If you have any items or books that may be useful for our topics then please bring them in, particularly any old toys that you may be able to get your hands on! We are always on the look out for ‘guest speakers’ too, so if you know anyone that would love to come in and talk to the class about toys that they used to play with as a child (and perhaps even bring them in to show us!) then we would love to meet them.

PE kits and days

We will be having two hours of PE a week every Monday and Tuesday. It is very important that your child has a suitable indoor and outdoor PE kit with trainers. Please make sure that your child's PE kit is clearly named.

Homework

Homework is very important as it helps your child to revise what they have learnt in school. It also helps to keep you informed of their progress and the current topics in the classroom. Here's how we set homework in our class:

Spellings are set weekly and children will be tested on Fridays.

Maths homework is also given out on Fridays and collected in the following week.

Daily reading is also essential

Things we need

  • Please ensure that your child brings their book bag with reading book and diary into school every day.
  • A healthy snack for break. In case you forget, there is always fruit in the classroom each day and also fresh water. You can also send in 30p for the daily tuck shop - just hand it in to Miss Poynton who will keep it safe.
  • Please ensure that your all of your child’s clothing is clearly labelled with their name so that we can try our best to return any items if lost.
  • Show and tell takes places every Friday. As it is so popular, just 2 children are chosen from a list to do this each week. Your child will be asked whether they would like to do it or not the previous week. We do encourage children to bring in something that they have won or been awarded, something linked to our topic, something linked to a big event like the birth of a baby or something they have made.

Celebrating success!

Ash is full of amazing children and we want to celebrate every success and achievement during this year both inside and outside of school. We would love to hear about all the amazing things your child does, so please do come in and tell us about them.

As a team, we are always here for you. If you need to discuss anything, please do come in and have a chat. If however, you would like a longer session to talk about your child’s needs, please make an appointment so we can discuss your child without feeling rushed. If you need any other information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Many thanks for your continued support,

Miss Poynton
