Autumn 2 in Reception class - Winter/Celebrations

Communication and Language/Literacy

We will continue to work on our speaking and listening skills through talking about stories, themes and celebrations and during roleplay activities. Our literacy sessions will include sharing the stories ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and ‘Stick Man’. We will have a go at writing our own story maps, cards and letters. We will continue to work on individual letter sounds and some double letter sounds, practise blending sounds to read simple words and look at red words.

Mathematics

During maths this half term, we will continue to review numbers to 5 using a range of practical objects and methods for counting, sorting, sharing and ordering. We will also investigate quantities within 5 by comparing groups and identifying more, less and equal quantities using matching, representing and subitising strategies. Also during Autumn term 2 we will explore 2D and 3D shapes. We will discover the characteristics and attributes of shapes and make connections by considering how shapes can be grouped.

Physical Development

We will continue to provide a range of experiences and activities that support physical development during continuous provision, using various small and large equipment. This includes adult led activities that are linked to our weekly themes and child-initiated play. We will continue to enjoy Dough Disco and also begin daily handwriting sessions.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This half term we will explore various celebrations, which will incorporate understanding and respecting difference. We will focus on why we are special, families and homes during our PSED sessions. Our adult led activities will encourage the development of listening to each other, sharing and taking turns.

Understanding the World

As the season changes, we will identify and discuss the things that we see linked to Winter and explore cold weather and polar animals. We will enjoy a range of activities linked to cultural celebrations such as Diwali, Christmas, Hannukah and Bonfire Night and think about the reasons behind these special times.

Expressive Art and Design

Art and design activities this half term will include using a range of creative resources such as clay, paint and collage materials to produce artwork linked to our themes. We will also use a range of small and large construction to build and create homes of different styles, thinking carefully about structure, design and purpose.
