Our Class Books

Updated: Jun 5

Below are some of the books that we have looked at in class and used in our learning. You might be familiar with them or even have a copy at home. Some of these stories can also be watched online on YouTube or BBC iPlayer (please type the book titles into your web search bar).

Autumn 1

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell

We've enjoyed talking about the 3 owls in this story and their habitat. We've also used props to help us retell the story and talked about our favourite parts.

Super Duck by Jez Alborough

There were lots of learning opportunities with this story. During literacy, we talked about the main elements of the story and spotted the rhyming pattern in the text. We also enjoyed a scientific experiment about flying using balloons!

Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell

This story linked nicely with our learning about Autumn. We enjoyed using our senses to explore lots of different Autumn vegetables and setting up our own role play Farm Shop.

Autumn 2

We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen

We had a lovely time retelling this story in the woods - it is definitely one of our class favourites! We also produced story maps to show the different challenges that the characters had to cross.

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson

This story brought with it lots of activities and experiences, including den building, Gruffalo hunts, clay Gruffalos, writing invitations and eating delicious Gruffalo crumble!

Stick Man by Julia Donaldson

Another fabulous story by Julia Donaldson that we have enjoyed. We particularly enjoyed Stick Man visiting us in class and being part of our literacy activities.

Spring 1

Jack and the Beanstalk

This fairytale took us on some fabulous adventures to the top of the beanstalk! We had fun retelling the story through roleplay and using props and brought elements of the story into our literacy and maths activites.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

A great story that provided us with lots of learning opportunities across the curriculum. We particularly enjoyed designing and building new furniture for the bears and comparing shape and size.

Cinderella

This story was lots of fun! As well as using it as the basis for our literacy, we also enjoyed thinking about castles, kings and queens! One of our favourite experiences was building our own castles using a range of creative resources.

Spring 2

Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt

This story provided lots of discussion about Spring and seasonal changes. The children enjoyed using props to retell the story. We designed our own 'emergency escape plans' too, just like Scaredy Squirrel!

What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson

We loved reading this story together as a class during our literacy sessions, and we were great at spotting the rhyming pairs in the text! We used this story to support discussion about animals and growth too.

Tadpole's Promise by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross

We talked lots about the process of metamorphosis after sharing this story and it linked well to our understanding of growth and change. We were able to learn lots of new language and really enjoyed looking at Mrs Stanton's tadpoles in class! This was a great story for discussion - everyone had lots to say!

Summer 1

If I Had a Dinosaur by Alex Barrow and Gabby Dawnay

This lovely story provided the opportunity for us to imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur as a pet! We enjoyed using small world resources to create dinosaur worlds and bringing dinosaurs into our role play experiences.

Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish by Michael Foreman

We enjoyed thinking about ways that we can look after our planet, which is a key message in this story. We also had a go at recycling different materials. We talked about what a volcano is and had a go at using different resources to create our own volcanoes.
