Welcome to Year 3

Updated: Nov 20, 2020

Hello! Welcome to Y3’s Class Page.

Your teachers this year are:

Miss Knowles – Class Teacher

Mrs Roper – Teaching Assistant

Mrs Widjanarko – 1:1

Mr Campbell – 1:1

Miss Lenton – 1:1

I am thrilled to be Y3’s teacher this year. I know most of the children already from when I used to teach them Science last year so that gives us all a bit of a head start. We had a lot of fun together!

This term our topic is the Bronze Age! We are really looking forward to uncovering some interesting facts and conducting lots of research on this. We will be exploring non-fiction texts and using our iPads to create a Bronze Age cartoon comic strip!

We will also be learning about movement and feeding in our Science work. This interlinks nicely with the project I had given the children to complete over the summer. We are going to be starting our own Community Garden where the children will be growing their own vegetable plants and cooking with what we produce. Mrs Roper and I can’t wait to get the children involved in helping us develop this idea.

In English we will be learning about The Dragon Slayer our fiction text. The children will be conducting their own research and exploring the features of different text types. Any additional research the children can do at home would be fantastic.

In maths the children will continue with their Power Maths books and will begin the year with addition and subtraction skills. We will use the column method to work out trickier sums and will practise our 3 and 4 times tables. Now the children are in Y3 they will be working on their fluency and reasoning skills and recalling number facts at speed. This year the children will be expanding on their times tables knowledge ready for their National Times Tables Check test in Y4.

Community Garden

Mrs Roper and I have started our own Community Garden project. We have been maintaining the planters by the side of school and have our very own greenhouse for planting vegetable seeds. The children in Year 3 will be integral to this and two responsible children will become our very own Garden Rangers. Throughout the school year the children will be involved in making this a brilliant learning environment. We have created fairy gardens, bug hotels, pumpkin bridges and will even spend our time out there reading and sharing stories with one another.

PE kits and days

We will be having two hours of PE a week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

It is very important that your child has a suitable indoor and outdoor PE kit with trainers. Please make sure that your child's PE kit is clearly named.

Homework is very important as it helps your child to revise what they have learnt in school. It also helps to keep you informed of their progress and the current topics in the classroom. Homework will be set every Friday and usually given a week to complete.

Just to note : We will be giving the children their spellings each week and some additional homework to support their learning in class. Initially we wanted the children to settle into Year 3 before giving them homework, however, the children have adapted brilliantly far quicker than expected. We would like for them to take on some extra work responsibilities in maths and English at home now too.

Things we need

  • A bottle of water (no juice please in case of sticky spillages!)

  • A healthy snack at break. Fruit is encouraged to be brought in to school each day for morning or afternoon break.

  • Fridays are 'treat' days, so your child can bring in a treat for their snack! Alternatively, your child can bring in 50p for our school's tuck shop which will allow them to buy a sausage roll/Capri Sun (50p each). We have a tuck shop money box in the classroom so please hand the money to the teacher on the day where it will be kept safe.

  • Book bag with reading book and reading record

  • PE kit - Please make sure you label your child's clothing with their name to ensure that it can be returned to your child if lost and found.

Celebrating success!

Year 3 is full of amazing children and we want to celebrate every success and achievement during this year both inside and outside of school. We would love to hear about all the amazing things your child does, so please do come in and tell us about them.

As a team, we are always here for you. If you need to discuss anything, please do come in and have a chat. If however, you would like a longer session to talk about your child’s needs please make an appointment so we can discuss your child without feeling rushed. If you need any other information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Many thanks for your continued support.
